The Juvenile Justice Rugby League, a new youth sports league in Jefferson Parish, is an innovative response to the challenges faced by at-risk youth in our community.

The Juvenile Justice Rugby League teams up at-risk teens involved with the Jefferson Parish Juvenile Justice System with volunteer mentors, coaches and rugby players from Archbishop Shaw High School to learn and compete in the game of rugby. Rugby is a hard-hitting, contact sport. It requires very little equipment but demands discipline, teamwork and determination, making it a great fit for young people working to turn their lives around through the Juvenile Justice System.

"Rugby gives these young men a healthy outlet for their aggression, while at the same time builds the character and self esteem that can help with their positive development," says Tim Falcon, an attorney, rugby coach and co-founder of the new league.

Juvenile Justice Rugby League teams are coached by volunteer members of the New Orleans Rugby Football Club. Teams compete against each other each week at Gretna City Park and will participate in a Championship Tournament.

On Friday, July 10, the public will have its first chance to support this new initiative and learn more about the league at a special luau-themed happy hour hosted by the New Orleans Rugby Football Club and sponsored by NOLA Brewing at the Rugby Pub in Gretna.

The event begins at 6 p.m. and includes drinks and luau-style food with a donation to the Juvenile Justice Rugby League and the contribution of nonperishable food items for the Gretna Food Bank.
